Originally from the Czech Republic, Liba Labik (Liba) arrived in Canada in 1993. Liba created art since her early childhood and she continued painting and drawing aside from her environmental studies in Prague and her work for the Podyji National Park (Czech Republic). Liba’s former career as an environmentalist became very important in shaping her inspiration for her art work.
Liba studied at the Alberta College of Art & Design, Calgary (BFA Painting Major) 1998-2002. After her graduation Liba opened and established LIBA (Life Is the Best Artist) Art Studio. She makes living as a freelance artist since then.
Liba’s first solo show in 2006 “Invisible” set up the direction for her future artwork. Her work became focused on the dimension “in between” two entities and on the connections and interactions between humanity and nature. Liba participated in several group shows in Calgary (Enigma and Panagakos Gallery in Art Central, Arts on Atlantic Gallery, Stone Fish Gallery and CounterFlux Gallery), in Westlands Art Gallery in Cochrane and in Gallery IS in Red Deer. Liba also exhibited her painting in the juried art show in Thompson Nicola Shuswap Chapter of Federation of Canadian Artists, Kamloops, BC and she was one of the finalists of juried exhibit of Infinity Art Gallery’s Summer Expo 2010. Liba showed her work for several years through Westlands Art Gallery in Cochrane and Arts on Atlantic Gallery in Calgary, where she held her third solo show “Little Discoveries”. Liba keeps building her career as commissioned portrait artist and semi-abstract artist in North America and the Czech Republic.
Liba was a full member of the Alberta Society of Artists, an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, member of Leighton Art Centre, Gallery & Museum in Calgary, member of Harcourt House Artist Run Centre in Edmonton and a member of Visual Arts Alberta Association & Canadian Artists Representation for several years.
Liba's work is ultimately about expressing a connection to spirituality, humanity, and nature. She was always intrigued by human hands, their relationships with each other and with nature as well as their visual beauty. For Liba, hands are tools of the mind, an extension of the mysterious world hidden within us, human beings. Nature represents for her the uncontrolled living system (Gaia) that she considers an infinite source of her muse. Liba's latest work explores time and its impact on life.
